Purify Hands at Temizuya
At the entrance water basin (temizuya), purify your hands: Left hand first, then right, then rinse your mouth, then left hand again.
Two Bows, Two Claps, One Bow
Standard shrine prayer: bow twice deeply, clap twice, make your prayer, then bow once more. Temple prayer is silent โ no clapping.
Respect No-Photo Zones
Many inner sanctuaries are strictly no-photography. Look for signs. Never photograph sacred objects or ceremonies without permission.
Walk on the Side of the Path
The center of the path (sandล) leading to the main shrine is for the gods. Walk to the side, not down the center.
Respect Restricted Areas
Do NOT cross roped-off or clearly marked restricted areas. Trespassing in sacred areas can result in being removed.
Speak Quietly
These are active places of worship. Keep voices low and silence your phone.
Fortune Papers (Omikuji)
If you draw a bad fortune (kyล/daikyo), tie it to a tree or rack at the shrine. If good, keep it. Don't litter with them.
