Drive on the LEFT
Japan drives on the LEFT side of the road. This is the #1 rule for foreign drivers. Violations carry heavy penalties.
Full Stop at Stop Signs
A full stop (3 seconds) is required at all 止まれ (tomare) stop signs. Rolling stops carry fines of ¥7,000–¥9,000.
Red Light = Stop, Always
Running a red light carries fines of ¥9,000+ and point deductions on your license. Police patrol strictly.
Zero Tolerance for Drunk Driving
Japan has a zero blood-alcohol tolerance for drivers. Even one drink can result in arrest. Fine: ¥300,000–¥1,000,000 + prison.
No Phone While Driving
Using a phone while driving: Fine ¥18,000–¥25,000 and 6 license points. Hands-free is required.
Parking Rules
Illegal parking fines start at ¥15,000. In Japan, you must own or prove access to parking before purchasing a car.
International Driver's License
An IDP (International Driving Permit) is required. Licenses from some countries (USA, Canada) are accepted for up to 1 year.
