Garbage Sorting & Disposal

Japan's strict waste separation rules

🔥

Burnable (Moeru) Trash

❗ IMPORTANT

Food scraps, paper, wood, leather, rubber. Use designated bags (usually colored). Collection days vary by municipality.

🗑️

Non-Burnable (Moenai) Trash

❗ IMPORTANT

Ceramics, glass, small metal items, umbrellas. Separate from burnable trash. Check local rules for collection days.

♻️

Recyclables

❗ IMPORTANT

PET bottles (emptied & labels removed), cans, glass bottles, cardboard, paper — must be sorted separately. Rinse containers before disposal.

🚯

No Street Littering

🚨 CRITICAL

Littering carries fines up to ¥50,000–¥300,000 depending on location. Shibuya Ward introduced on-the-spot ¥2,000 fines in 2025.

📅

Garbage Collection Days

⚠️ WARNING

Trash must be put out ONLY on designated collection days and ONLY in the morning. Leaving trash outside on wrong days is a violation.

🏪

Use Convenience Store Bins Properly

⚠️ WARNING

Convenience store trash bins are for store-purchased items only. Do not dump household trash in them — it is illegal.
